Blast from the Past

On today, February 13th in 1879, Sarojini Naidu was born. Sarojini Naidu was the first woman president of the Indian National Congress and the first woman to be Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Sarojini was also an author and poet writing works such as The Broken Wing: Songs of Love, Death, and Destiny and The Golden Threshold. Happy Birthday Sarojini!

Currently Today

At last night’s 59th annual Grammy awards many well known female performers were recipients of awards, most recognizably Adele for winning five awards including Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Of course with Adele’s win for Album of the Year came much speculation as many in the audience thought the award should have gone to Beyonce for her groundbreaking visual album Lemonade; one of those people being Adele herself. So what did Adele do? She broke her Grammy award in half and shared her win with Beyonce. Talk about sharing an achievement.

Did You Know

Currently, about 71% of mothers with children under the age of 18 work while in 1975, fewer than 47% held a job. Some years ago, the thought of women having job outside of the home was unheard of. Not only do more women work today, but women have jobs in a wider range of fields than before. This stems from the growth in education and learning resources we have today as well. Guess us girls just keep getting smarter and smarter.

  1. Olivia I love your blog! The layout is so dope (I used the same background). Also the different subheadings and gifs are super useful. This feminist march looks interesting. Tell me though what exactly is a zine?

    1. A good example of a zine is the advertisement poster. Its like an artwork (or usually a journal) that is cut and paste art of different wacky pictures, font and patterns. Also, thank you for the comment!

  2. All of these facts are very interesting, and I want to do more research into them. But can you tell me about a personal experience that you encountered that affected women’s rights since you said you'd mention that in your introduction?

    1. Recently, I did attend the women's march in my hometown of Philadelphia. I got to experience first hand the women's movement and got to interact with individuals with a similar mindset and end goal for the movement. Personally, I experience women's rights everyday as a woman. One example being healthcare and the "women's tax". When picking up any medications that are specific to my gender, there is usually a co pay. This is not the same for medications specific to males. Also feminine products that I buy have a sales tax even though they are a monthly necessity. Of course there is much more, but I will make sure to include personal experiences in my blog. Thanks for you input!
